Searching For The Blockhouse Part II, Egypt

Outside the Blockhouse, Germans and Australians faced one another with intent to take life. Inside, they worked shoulder to shoulder to save it.

‘Soldiers of the 2/3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion dug in close to the railway embankment on the south side, near the Blockhouse during the battle of El Alamein.’ Australian War Memorial PO 2743.001
43 men from B Company, 2/43rd Battalion (part of the 24th Brigade) survived the battle around the Blockhouse (a company is usually made up of 100-225 men, although I was unable to find out how many soldiers of B Company were engaged in the battle). Australian War Memorial PO 5968.002
War photographer Captain Frank Hurley: ‘Counting the cost. This shot was taken shortly after a decisive tank battle for a blockhouse near Tel el Eissa. In the foreground are some of our tanks knocked out by anti-tank guns. We accounted for 18 enemy tanks in this battle.’ Australian War Memorial, 014117
